The Community Chest Says Thank-You For Over HK$278 Million Donations Raised In 2017/2018

At The Community Chest 2017/2018 Annual Awards Ceremony on 26 June, Chest President  Mr Charles Lee, GBM, JP expressed his appreciation for 246 individuals and organisations for their contribution to the Chest, which brought in donations of over HK$278 million all of which, without any deduction for administration expenses, will go to support 162 member social welfare agencies that reach out to more than two million beneficiaries in Hong Kong.
 
In addition, Mr Lee is pleased to announce that the Chest will be celebrating 50 years in HK coming November, it is also a reminder of the support and trust enjoyed by the organisation in past years for which he is most grateful.  To step up the work of the Chest in anticipation of its 50th Anniversary, provision was made to fund a pilot scheme in September 2017 – The Community Housing Movement that provides housing for people waiting for government housing. The $50 million commitment for hardware costs aim to provide 500 such units over three years, with another $28 million budgeted for support services for the residents.

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) received the Top Donor of the Year Award (Companies, Organisations & Individuals Category) for the 18th year for donating more than HK$15 million, making the company a role model of corporate giving. HSBC also matched their staff donation dollar-for-dollar through The Hongkong Bank Foundation.
 
Cheung Kong Group was presented with the Second Top Donor Award with donations to  The Community Chest Rainbow Fund Donation Hotline to help people in financial crisis. The Third Top Donor, Sun Hung Kai Properties has been an active participant in many fund-raising events. The Wharf Group, Ding Kuen Charity Fund Limited, Maxim’s Group, Sa Sa Making Life Beautiful Charity Fund Limited, Hang Seng Bank, EK International Holdings Limited and The S H Ho Foundation Limited were presented with the Fourth to Tenth Top Donors respectively.
 
The Hong Kong Jockey Club was presented the “Partner in Charity Award” for their generous annual grant toward the Chest’s administrative expenses.
 
Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, who was presented the “Partner of Corporate Giving Award”, has initiated a unique fund-raising platform – “Stock Code Balloting for Charity Scheme” since 1999 to provide companies who listed in Hong Kong the option to choose their stock codes by making a donation to the Chest. In 2017/2018, 85 companies took part in this Scheme and over HK$80 million was raised. 
 
“The Community Chest Award for Outstanding Service” was presented to: Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims and Hong Kong Family Welfare Society for their role in administrating applications to The Community Chest Rainbow Fund; and Hong Kong Golf Club for providing their venue and professional assistance to The Community Chest Charity Golf Day for 20 consecutive years.
 
In the Civil Service category, the 2017/2018 Top Donor award went to the Education Bureau for its role in promoting “Greening for the Chest” among local primary and secondary schools. Second Top Donor award went to Home Affairs Department for promoting the Chest in the community.
 
The Chest’s 2017/2018 Board Members including Dr Simon Kwok, SBS, JP; Mrs Irene Yau, ISO; Mr Charles Yang, BBS, JP; Mr Frank Lyn; Mr Billy Kong, BBS, MH, JP; Mr Vernon Moore, BBS; Campaign Committee Co-Chairmen Dr John Chan, GBS, JP; Dr Dennis Sun, BBS, JP as well as other members were present at the Ceremony.

The Wharf Group has shown their support by organising events in their shopping malls to raise funds for the Chest and helped steer the “Swim for Millions”. The organisation was presented with the Fourth Top Donor Award. Ms Doreen Lee (right), Vice Chairman of The Wharf Group received the award from Mr Charles Lee, President of The Community Chest.

Hong Kong Golf Club has provided their venue and professional assistance to The Community Chest Charity Golf Day for 20 consecutive years. The Club was presented “The Community Chest Award for Outstanding Service”.
