The Community Chest Says Thank-You for Over HK$388 Million Raised in 2018/2019

The Community Chest Annual Awards Ceremony was held on 27 November at the Government House. About 150 awards were presented to individuals and organisations who made significant contributions to the Chest in the 2018/2019 campaign year, which also marked the Chest’s 50th Anniversary year. Over HK$388 million was raised, the highest donation amount received since the organisation was founded in 1968.
Guest of Honour, The Hon Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBM, GBS, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, officiated at the ceremony. Mrs Lam presented awards to key donors in the following categories:
Top Ten Donors
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), a staunch supporter of the Chest since the charity’s inception in 1968, received the Top Donor of the Year Award for the 19th year. With the dollar-to-dollar matching of staff donation by The Hongkong Bank Foundation, HSBC contributed over HK$16 million in 2018/2019, demonstrating excellent corporate citizenship.
Ding Kuen Charity Fund, the Second Top Donor Award recipient was most generous in its support for the Corporate and Employee Contribution Programme.
The Third Top Donor Award was presented to Cheung Kong Group for its special 50th anniversary donation, and matching donations through The Community Chest Rainbow Fund Donation Hotline.
Sa Sa International Holdings Limited, Stan Group (Holdings) Limited, Sun Hung Kai Properties, Nameson Group, Maxim’s Group, Biel Crystal (HK) Manufactory Limited and Bank of China (Hong Kong) were presented with the Fourth to Tenth Top Donor Awards respectively.
Special Awards
The Hong Kong Jockey Club was presented the Partner in Charity Award for their generous annual grant towards the Chest’s administrative expenses, which enabled the Chest to allocate all donations to local social services without any deductions.
The Partner of Corporate Giving Award went to Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited for initiating the Stock Code Balloting for Charity Scheme to provide companies undertaking IPOs the option to choose their stock codes by making a donation to the Chest. In 2018/2019, over 85 companies took part in this Scheme and nearly HK$85 million was raised.
The Benefactor of the Year Awards went to the late Madam Chan Wing Hing and Li Ding Chung Memorial Fund, who donated a significant amount of donations through the Chest to benefit the community.
The Community Chest Award for Outstanding Service was presented to The Education Bureau for its role in promoting “Greening for the Chest” among local schools. Also won this award was Home Affairs Department, who encouraged the community to support the Chest’s work.
During the Ceremony, Mr Charles Lee, GBM, JP, Chest’s President; Mr Peter Wong, JP, Executive Committee Chairman; and Dr Simon Kwok, SBS, JP; Campaign Committee Chairman acknowledged the generosity of other donors with President’s Awards, Awards of Excellence, Awards of Distinction, and Awards of Merit.
The Chest’s 2018/2019 Board Members including Mrs Irene Yau, ISO, Mr Charles Yang, BBS, JP, Mr Billy Kong, BBS, MH, JP, Mr Vernon Moore, BBS, Dr John Chan, GBS, JP; as well as other members were present at the Ceremony.

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) received the Community Chest Top Donor of the Year Award for the 19th year. Demonstrating outstanding corporate citizenship, HSBC raised more than HK$16 million during the year.
Cheung Kong Group was awarded the Third Top Donor Award. The Group was recognised for its special donation for Chest’s 50th anniversary, and continued support for The Community Chest Rainbow Fund Donation Hotline to help people afflicted by emergency financial crisis.
Sa Sa International Holdings Limited proactively invested in Hong Kong’s community welfare development and attained the Fourth Top Donor Award.
Stan Group (Holdings) Limited demonstrated strong philanthropic spirit through its keen participation in the Chest’s events and was presented with the Fifth Top Donor Award.
