Subsidy Scheme for Cataract Surgery
(2022/23 – 2024/25)

Project Description:

Cataracts are common among older people, and surgery is the only way to treat them. Due to Hong Kong’s ageing population, the number of cataract patients continues to increase, and the waiting time for cataract surgery in public hospitals also lengthens. According to information from the Hospital Authority, a new cataract patient has to wait three years before undergoing the surgery. On the other hand, the cost of cataract surgery in the private market is beyond affordability of some seniors.
The Chest supports the member agency to provide free cataract surgery for elderly patients with financial difficulties. This allows them to undergo the surgery in time so as to restore their vision and improve their lives.
