Supported Service:
The Community Chest Subsidy Scheme of Community Memory Clinic for People with Dementia
(2024/25 – 2026/27)
Project Description:
In Hong Kong, 10% of people aged over 70 have dementia, whilst one third of those aged over 85 have dementia. Unfortunately, the diagnostic rate of dementia has remained at only 10% in the past few decades. The long waiting time for public medical services (average queuing time for the 1st assessment by specialists in public hospitals is 12-18 months) is causing under or delayed diagnosis. Most grassroots families cannot afford medical treatment in private medical facilities, and their only way out is to wait. But these 12-24 months is the golden period for effective intervention for people with dementia.
The Chest supports the member agency to enable people with signs and symptoms of dementia who experience financial difficulties to receive timely diagnosis, allowing intervention to begin early while waiting for public medical services.
